Beinhart/New Mystery Nominated for Edgar

Larry Beinhart's short story which appeared in the Spring `95 Bad Women Issue of New Mystery Magazine, has been nominated for the Edgar Award for best short story published in `95 (III#2). The much-revered Edgar is named after Poe. The judges are fellow professional mystery authors, members of Mystery Writers of America. The story appears on mysterynew.com throughout April. Mr Beinhart's short story, `Death in a Small Town', features a jogging college boy who was almost a yuppy in a get-down tale of treachery and promiscuity. The frame-up of this innocent involves the trashy mistress of a small town sheriff and a murder puzzle hinging on the pronunciation of one special name. The action-packed, bold story continues the tradition of the gritty crime tale with modern trimmings. It was the lead story in the magazine which also included new exclusive work by the mystery writers, Jerry Kennealy, Henry Slesar, Mike Drummond, Rosemarie Santini and debut author, Frank Hickey.

"We consider the Edgar Award for the short story form to be the most important one since the genesis of the genre consists of mainly short stories written by Poe and Doyle and others," said a senior editor at NMM. "Mr Beinhart's fine short stories honor all of us who struggle for freedom of expression and higher standards for the mystery, crime, detective and suspense short story." The now-quarterly magazine was founded by a group of "...rebel celebrity mystery writers and angry upstarts who wanted to roil the genre," according to the group's manifesto. Over ninety professional mystery writers from all over the world, (Havana, Paris, Madrid, Tokyo, Belgrade and more,) have contributed new exclusive original short fiction to the magazine...and ten new writers have made their debut in NMM.

Mr Beinhart's novels including AMERICAN HERO and NOBODY RIDES FOR FREE, (an Edgar- winner,) have won critical aclaim. He has also won the Silver Dagger Award presented by the British Crime Writers Association. He is currently a Raymond Chandler/Fulbright Fellow at Oxford.

New Mystery also includes the sharpest reviews of new mystery novels, CD's, New Media and film plus many mystery ads and lists and news and views of the mystery world. Membership dues still only US$27.77 a year, includes code for website, mysterynew.com/mystnew and more.
