In the chilling psychological thriller NOTHING BUT THE NIGHT,
ISBN: 0-8027-3330-1; $23.95 hc), Bill Pronzini
skillfully weaves the lives of Cam Gallagher and Nick Hendryx together,
perfectly pacing the narrative from its gentle beginning to its startling
conclusion. Through alternating chapters written in each man's voice,
Pronzini deftly draws portraits of two men so deeply haunted by their
pasts, that they are often barely able to go through the motions of day to
day living.
On the outside, Cam is the successful owner of Paloma Wine Systems,
happily married to his wife Hallie for 13 years, with "two smart and
pretty daughters and few debts". Inside, however, he is tortured by the
memories--and the nightmares they bring--of the night his father killed
his mother, then turned the gun on himself. Tempted by his colleague
Jenna Bailey, the product manager at Fenwood Creek--one of the many
wineries connected with Paloma Wine Systems--Cam also finds himself
struggling with a drinking problem and living with the fear that if he
isn't very, very careful, he'll lose both himself and everything he has.
Nick lives to pursue the face in a sketch, a police composite of the man
who lost control of his car and slammed his wife, Annalisa Hendryx, into a
coma. Riding the night from town to town in search of the nameless face,
Nick is determined to do what the police couldn't--avenge the man who hurt
his wife.
With the finely tuned skill of an artist and the ability to construct
prose that echoes each man's mental state, Pronzini gradually reveals each
man's inner thoughts, adroitly setting the stage for the final scenes that
will reveal the terrible secret one man has hidden in the deepest part of
his memory.

Nothing But the Night
"Pronzini, creator of the Nameless detective series, is also a master of
suspense. He employs a dual point of view to prevent readers from
completely identifying with either Gallagher or Hendryx. Their characters
are revealed gradually; neither is what he seemed, and both have chosen to
block out critical elements from their pasts. The final act is
unsettling, and contains a memorable twist. This is a strong effort from
a consistently entertaining craftsman."
