New Mystery Magazine Fall 2005 Here are the recent and upcoming new novels we thought worth reviewing:
St Martin's Press is out with the latest Robert Ludlum, THE AMBLER WARNING. This is a great thrill of a read with the same rush of action mixed with self-discovery we got in the Bourne novels, now also films. Master Ludlum takes us to a secret mental ward for ex-spies off the coast of Virginia where former intelligence officers who have lost their minds are kept securely. Here find Hal Ambler, not crazy but a heavily medicated patient, a former clandestine operative must escape the drug haze... and the island to find out who he is and who put him there. And why.
I pulled an all-nighter with this novel and happily stumbled through the next day at the office. What else can one expect from a damn good book? Highly Recommended! Reviewed by Charles Raisch

If you read a lot of mysteries, the occasional way-out book may appeal to you. For a wild ride, try the warped murders of nursery rhyme characters in the fantasy series by Robert Rankin. THE HOLLOW CHOCOLATE BUNNIES OF THE APOCALYPSE is his latest from Gollancz isbn #0575074019. This fairytale-noir features a serial killer who leaves chocolate calling cards at the scene of each murder. Bent, inane and brilliant story of the only detective in Toytown. RECOMMENDED. Also recommended is fine regional novel about corrupt politics and star reporters on the Susquehanna, FATAL DEAD LINES by John Luciew. Nearly geezered-out obituary writer teams with newshound starlet to bust the governer for murder and more. Some great writing and insights into Harrisburg and all state capitol politics. Pocket Books/Simon & Shuster. Poisoned Pen Press presents A TASTE OF MURDER and A SECOND HELPING
OF MURDER, two volumes of recipes from mystery writers and wannabes. This is a plug
my book and add some garlic cookbook. Some of the recipes actually come from
important authors. We made Tony Fennelly's `Mama Catoires's Shrimp Etouffee and
Donald Westlakes's `May's Famous Tuna Casserole' to family applause, but most recipes were very common and not worth turning on the stove.
For mystery enthusiasts only, especially chubby old ladies in sneakers that
dislike men, a theme throughout both volumes. Stick with James Beard. RECOMMENDED.
